We Are Busy

A view of casa Gallup at 10:24AM: Lily having her morning bath, blankets keeping us warm, Relief Society bag and binder in tow, blogging... er... working on my calling, homework, work, etc...

It is a chilly morning here in Calgary, hence all of the blankets.  I have one of my favourite lectures on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 8AM.  It's a good thing I really like the prof and class, or else chances are I wouldn't go to class that early (tried and proven!).  I have a WONDERFUL break from 9:15-11AM.  Since I live 5 minutes from the school, I come home and eat, sometimes nap, study, blog, chill with Lily, whatever I feel like.

So I know that I am not some sponsored blog (only in my dreams), but I do know I get a little bit of traffic and tomorrow is a BIG day for me!!!!

There will be a giveaway involved, so tell all of your friends/family/strangers to head on over to this blog and be prepared for tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!

I paid $4.50 to park closer to my class so I could be on time this morning (due to me sleeping in)

I spent my study time last night, and my entire last lecture reading rockstar diaries

I have done some major slacking in my readings (were talking I have between 150-200 textbook pages to read in the next week).

My sleep schedule suck, I nap whenever and then don't go to bed until late... it's bad news bears

I have been tempted to skip class twice this week... we are officially 3 week in PATHETIC!

still have water in my ear from my shower incident this weekend (which resulted in the 24 hour pre-emergency room visit)

I feel like I am hearing the same lecture, class after class

This fall is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!!!!  Who knew it didn't rain ever day in Alberta, and that summer came in September?

Lily and I have been fighting lately

I have started cooking to procrastinate my studying

There you have it, my confessions of the day!

General Relief Society Broadcast

The past 24 hours have been a bit crazy! I thought I had ruptured my ear drum, tried to sleep, ended up taking myself to the 24 hour walk in clinic (pre-emergency room if you ask me), waited for 3 hours, came home, slept the day away, went shopping with my lovey, felt sick again, went to sleep, woke up feeling guilty for not going to the general relief society broadcast (although prior to going to sleep I decided it was best to stay home sick, than to go and get any of the other women sick), pulled the broadcast up online and will forever be grateful for technology.

I absolutely love The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. I am so very grateful for my membership in this marvelous church. I will forever be grateful that I decided to watch the broadcast over doing my homework. I love President Monson, and I know he leads and guides this true church in these latter days. I sustain him with all of my being.
I have had such a problem with judging people. Over the last week in my sociology classes I have realized just how bad of a problem I have. It was made even more apparent when we had a lesson on judging in institute on Friday. Tonight President Monson spoke on the harm that judging does to us. I am committed to be a better person. I am committed to be more Christ like, for Charity is the true love of Christ.
If you haven't had the chance to watch the broadcast, go here to watch it.

Cookin' and Freezin'

I love the movie Julie Julia, a lot.  I have felt like Julie recently as I have been cooking up a storm.  All of you think that's great and that Shane is happy and all is well... in reality, all is well, but we don't have any cook books paired down for 2 and end up with lots of left overs and have very little freezer space.

Tonight at dinner Shane and I came up with a plan...  I cook for 1 week, and we freeze the leftovers, and the next week, we have all of those left overs again...  We need a deep freeze, and a bigger house (kitchen especially)!  I figured I would give you a quick little tour of my cooking space and how I freeze our meals.

My quaint little kitchen (I have just about as much counter space on the other side of the ONE TUB sink).  TINY!

Every thing in its place... neatly and precisely stacked

When I freeze our meals, I put them in ziplock bags and lay them flat.  It's a good trick if you buy a lot of hamburger.  Freezing things flat helps them thaw out evenly and it takes far less time.

So there you have it, if you cook a bit too much, throw it in a ziplock and in the freezer it goes.  I know these meals will come in handy once school gets to be a bit more than I can handle.  We need more mouths to feed!!!!!!!  Anyone who wants to come to dinner, you're welcome any night.

Smarty Pants

Have I ever told you I have the smartest husband ever?! Did you know he was valedictorian of his high school, and held close to a 4.0 GPA in university?  (and he married ME!?)

His company had a BBQ last Friday (YES it was FREEZING) and they had a guess how many are in the jar competition.  The winner email came today and this is how it read:

 "Good Morning Everyone!
A big Thank you to everybody who was able to come to the BBQ on Friday despite the cold weather and busy schedules! It was great to see you there and a pleasure to host our little gathering to show Dynastream’s appreciation for all that you do!
As I am sure you know we have a few prizes to be awarded!

1) The “cows” Candy jar count prize goes to Shane Gallup for his guess of 93 Cows! The actual number was in fact 93! Good Job Shane!

2) The “Wiggly Worms” Candy jar prize also goes to Shane Gallup for his guess of 133 Worms. The actual number of worms was 137! Yay Shane! (Hmmmmm, he is a little too good at this.…)

Shane you may come and collect your delicious prizes!"

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go and enjoy some yummy treats :)

Food Drive

This past weekend we participated in the Calgary wide inter-faith food drive. In 2008 (our 1st year of the food drive), this event went down in the Guinness Book of World Records as the most food donated in one day. Here is the rundown of how it went:

Tuesday and Thursday we stuffed all of the bags with the fliers and delivered them to peoples doorsteps

Saturday morning we went around and picked up little bundles like this on peoples doorsteps

Shane picking up some food :)

Gima was our helper, we VERY much appreciated him.  I drove while Shane and Gima picked up the bags and put them in the trunk.

Even with houses that said "no fliers" on the door, we still got food :)  YAH!

This is the rundown... Shane walks up to the door

Off with the goods

Gima and Shane fearlessly walking down the road to collect donations

We dropped all of the food off at the mall parking lot.  Note the cars dropping off food, the HUGE boxes for the food, the missionaries helping, the forklifts to pick up the boxes, and 2 semi trucks to take all of the food to the Calgary food bank

The food that was donated will help families have a far better Christmas season.  We decided we should celebrate with a little bit of food as well.  It was a lot of fun and felt so good to help those in need!

Last night in our Adult Session of Stake Conference, it was reported that they estimated we collected over 1 million pounds of food!  YAY CALGARY!!!!  Thank you to all who donated and helped!  It was a huge success!

Best Friends

You know when there is that person/people in your life who you can't live without, who build you up, and you have one heck of a time together?

These 2 are those girls who were that for me (can you pick out who they are before you get to the final picture?

I thought you might like to get to know them (or stories about them if you do know them).

I met Crystal the first day of drivers ed.  We were both excited to drive, and happy when we found out our Birthdays were in the same week.  We were boy crazy and both got our first kiss just after we turned 16, had boyfriends who were friends, and went on lots of double dates.  Since we had missed all of the dances our sophomore year, we created our own dance with the boys and had an evening including pictures, dancing, and becoming "true knights."  Crystal also set me up with her brother, let me spend time with her family, and even take naps in between shifts at work at her house.  I always envied Crystal for her amazing musical talent.  She has an amazing voice, can play the saxophone, and piano.  She set me up with a boy to go to the Christmas dance our junior just after being dumped.  We always ended up crossing paths in one way or another.  I wished that I would have listened to Crystals boy advice LONG before I had.  Crystal and I have always been ones who care a lot and love deeply.  I was happy to be in the waiting room with Crystal while Katie got married, and alone in the waiting room when she got married.  I was happy to be at her wedding, and tried to rig it so I could catch her bouquet (since she had caught Katies and got married, it seemed only right).  I wish more than anything that I still lived in Logan and was able to hang out with her all of the time.  She just announced that she is having a baby in April and I am beyond excited for her!

Katie and I met at Crystals house shortly after Crystal and I started drivers ed together.  My first memory of Katie was pretending a couch was in a shrinks office and Katie was the shrink.  Katie thought that Crystal and I were crazy for liking boys so much and kissing.  Katie ended up dating my first boyfriends best friend.  Katie worked at Subway and I would go in and visit her often just to chat.  Katie and I used to go to late night movies and spend the night at each other houses.  I would drag her along with me and my boyfriends and she would happily comply.  Katie made sure that I had a card and chick flick after having my warts frozen off.  She came to my singles ward with me week after week and made cookies with me for the boys after church.  We went on road trips together down to Southern Utah every chance we could get.  Katie was always the listening ear and a major confident.  Ironically enough, I told Rob to go and ask Katie to dance when we were country dancing at the union station.  Katie was the first of us 3 to get married.  I was happy to be at her wedding (in the waiting room).  I was so sad when Rob came into Katies life, because that meant I was headed out of it.  I was wrong and we have definitely worked things out.  I was happy to be headed to Utah shortly after Katie was due with Miss Natalie and happy to hold that beautiful baby and love her.  Katie and I still talk on the phone from time to time and reminisce about our past.  I wish I still lived in Utah and all 3 of us could get together often.  I am grateful to Katie for sharing her family with me and for being such a wonderful friend.

I taught them both to drive a stick, we had a Napolean Dynomite obsession, road tripped to Cedar City together, and had lockers next to one another.  We had all decided that since I was the first to be kissed, I would be the last to get married.  All 3 of us were married in the temple to richeous priesthood holders.  We were all right on the order of kisses, marriage, and babies!

I could tell you about a million and ten stories about the 3 of us, whether they be together or with just one or the other.  I love and admire these girls for their strong testimonies in the gospel of Jesus Christ.  I admire them for the trials they have gone through and come out even better than they were before.  Crystal and Katie have had a HUGE impact on my life and continue to do so!  Katie is a wonderful mom, and I know Crystal will do a wonderful job too as soon as her little bean arrives.  I love them both dearly and am grateful we still have our friendship after the high school days are gone.

Bikram 30 Day Challenge

So as most of you know by now, I clean the Bikram yoga studio on Monday nights.  This Monday was a whirl wind of a day, and as I was there cleaning, I noticed that it was missing in my life and made a big impact when it went.  So... in talking to my friend who is headed to Bikram teacher training and realized that the 30 day challenge starting today was definitely something I needed to take part in.

So this morning, I made sure I was up, ate a small healthy meal, and was ready to hit my mat for the 9:15AM class.  Let me just make a personal disclaimer.... Bikram yoga is 100 times harder than running has ever been!  I didn't even make it through the first pose series and had to kneel down... talk about a major bummer!  Typically it's the heat that gets to me, but not today, I didn't even notice the heat.  Cheryl our beloved instructor asked me a series of questions including "are you ok, had I eaten breakfast, was it big, did I drink coffee this morning?"  I pushed and tried my hardest and was SO sick... (still am nearly 6 hours later).  I felt like I was going to fall over, and pass out.  I did my best to do at least 1 of each posture, but I knew that there were some that would be pathetic to even attempt and only  make things worse.  I could hardly do a Bikram sit up after savasana, I could hardly stay awake!

I was grateful when the end of class came and quickly let myself out the room.  Cheryl was so sweet and encouraging as she always is.  She had me drink some coconut water and continued to make sure I was ok, questioned my stress level, and said she looked forward to seeing me soon.  I promised I would be back tomorrow, but probably not ever for another morning class... 4pm is looking like it is going to be my new Bikram time...  Stay tuned for my updates.... I am DETERMINED to do this... my mind and body need it now more than ever!

Read more about the woman in Oprahs magazine who did the 60 day challenge here.

Fall Wreath

I love flowers and arranging them.  This is how I spent my Saturday morning after I slept in...

sorting all of my materials

The finished product on the door

The look of it from a distance

I was so pleased with how it turned out.  The thing that made it even better was when Shane saw it and said "That looks expensive, no one would ever guessed it only cost $20.

Do you want me to make you a fall wreath?

Tell A Friend Friday

It's been a while since I have had one of these, so here it goes...

Today is my last day here at Cavalier/Red Eagle Aviation, it's finally starting to hit me (just under 4 hours to go).

Monday I start school. Last night as we were going to sleep I asked Shane if he would take me for a "tour" around campus to help me get pumped/familiar. I have done a really good job blocking leaving my job and starting school out of my mind that now that I need to worry about or acknowledge the fact that my life will DRASTICALLY change in the next few days, I'm mentally not quite there yet.

My house got semi put back together last night, the backroom with the new desk will be beautiful after tomorrow (pictures to come).

Which brings me to my next point... We found a condo that we LOVE and has SO much potential last night... we are meeting with a realtor to represent us as buyers possibly this weekend.... CRAZY stuff! I'll keep you posted on where things go with this one.

I need to paint my nails before Monday comes around.

We are throwing a back to school BBQ tonight for the young marrieds in our ward. I am so happy with the sunshine and PRAYING that we will have NO rain tonight for the BBQ.

Talk about busy! I've got more to do lists than anyone would want to know, and nearly as many to buy lists too... One week from today we could be looking to be moving, and I will have 1 week of school behind me.

Best of luck to all of the other U of C students headed back on Monday... If I come up to you and ask you where the heck I am going, just smile and point me in the right direction. Thanks!

Labour Day Weekend

Oh did we labour, long and hard! The table refinish and craft/desk for our backroom have been SO much work. They are both looking fabulous and after another coat of paint on the table and at least 1 more coat of finish on the table and they will be finished. I have to that these guys for their inspiration, and I can't forget to that Lily for her help as well

(Lily helping me with laundry as I type this post. Aren't her nails pretty)?

and most importantly, Shane. Seriously, I would have fell apart many times and given up half way through if it wasn't for him. His encouragement, his brains, his skills, he's amazing, I love him... lots. (even if he threatened to create a blog against all of projects I have been doing).

So with all this DIY spirit in me, I decided I would wash our shower curtain. Everywhere I read it said to pop the plastic curtain in the washing mashine with some vinegar and baking soda and BAM... clean shower curtain. Yeah right, ours came out with holes all through it. We had to replace it and while the whole house is a giant mess right now, this is what our beautiful new shower curtain looks like.

By Monday our house will be put back together and I can do a post on the bathroom and a before and after of the backroom and table, not to mention all of the back to school hoo ha that I have blocked out of my mind and my back to school clothes (it's been 2 years people!!!). It's going to be big and you won't want to miss it (since I know all of you wait so eagerly for my posts... ha ha).

P.S. I'm still working on Shane to get me a DSLR... Thank you for all of your comments about the cameras and photographers as well.

A Hair Affair

I figured I'd give you the run down of my new hair and the chic salon I go to

Prior to appointment... sporting my favourite fur

The digs...

The mixing station

Another look at the salon

Work in progress

The finished product... all ready for back to school

I absolutely love the work Vanessa does! If you want killer hair like me, drop me a line... I've got $20 off coupons :)

What do you think of the new do?

Thursday, September 2, 2010

Do you ever feel like you have so many good ideas that you are going to burst!? I feel that way and just want to have unlimited time each day to do whatever I want with. Oh well...

I am grateful that this is a long weekend coming up. I am looking to do some sanding, painting, staining, etc. I am wanting to finish my back room (we STILL are trying to get the time to do that, and school starts in 11 days, not to mention Scentsy rolled out their fall/winter catalogue yesterday and I need to really get on that), make a wreathe for my door, do 2 yoga sessions, and possibly run (hoping for 5 miles), but we'll see how I feel after the yoga.

In other notes, I am looking to get a DSLR... any suggestions (I need to convince Shane still as well)... pros/cons, etc...

On that same note, once my braces are off, Shane and I DESPERATELY need some pictures taken. Does anyone know of a great (affordable) photographer here in Calgary, and a great location for photos?

"Goal setting is the core existence that defines life."
-Joanne Bonomi

I have been told you are 90% more likely to accomplish a goal that is written down vs one that is just said.
Here are the goals I want to have accomplished by the time I'm 25:
Run a marathon
Have my bachelors degree
Have long hair
Have my own floral business
Be a mom

Not that these are in a set order, probably semi accurate for order, but life can change in an instant.
I'm excited and plan to meet all of these goals.
What are some of yours?
